Advice to Travian newbies

Read the Travian FAQ and most of this site before you register. Prepare for a solid hour online as soon as you register, then allow for several hours a day if you get really into it. For holidays you can arrange a sitter, who gets in as you by using his or her own password - having access to most of what you can do but not your account.

A good thing is to also build crannies when you start so raiders do not get any resources from you. You should also think about training troops to gather resources from early on.
Starting with Romans or Gauls is encouraged, as Teutons are targeted towards experienced players.
You will need to join a good alliance.
Also when starting you have beginners protection which keeps people from attacking you for about 10 days. So while you still have it you want to build up defencive buildings and build your tribes defensive units
When you start out, advance your resource feilds as much as possible. Get each resource producing at 400 to 500 an hour, and upgrade your warehouse and granary. Even if you're attacked, you'll build resources quickly enough that it won't make too much of a difference.
Try to get into an alliance ASAP
If you're a Gaul, build a trapper and upgrade it. Traps will discourage smaller villages from attacking you.
Build up your town wall to a high level so your village's population doesn't bottom out.
