At the Tournament Square your troops can train their stamina. The further the building is upgraded the faster are your troops beyond a minimum distance of 20 squares. Each level gives more speed to your units. Only the distance greater than 20 squares is affected by the change.
For example, your target is 50 squares away - your units move at normal speed for 20 squares then the increased speed for the final 30 squares, and likewise on return. Merchant speed is not affected.

Usage[]
The Tournament Square requires a level 15 Rally Point. Due to its high cost and use only on long trips, it is not built very often except by the biggest and most experienced players. It can be built to level 15 with one warehouse but a player would need four warehouses to reach level 20. Therefore it can be important to plan ahead if a player wishes to construct it.
The obvious benefit of reduced travel time is that it effectively widens a player's farming or chiefing radius (the further a unit has to travel to reach a farm, the faster it pays off its build cost, thus closer farms are more efficient assuming a player has sufficient troops to capture all the target's resources). Later levels are expensive, but add disproportionately more villages to the farming radius.
For example, if a player decides to farm no further than four hours out at maceman speed on a 3x speed server, his farming radius is 84 fields with no Tournament Square. A radius of 84 fields covers approximately 22,000 fields in area. If a player then adds a level 20 Tournament Square, his macemen travel at 63 fields per hour once 20 fields out (7 basic speed * 3x speed server *300% from the square). His macemen take approximately 1 hour to reach 20 fields travelling at speed 21, leaving 2 hours 35 to travel at 63 fields per hour. Thus in four hours, his farming radius is 192 fields, which covers approximately 115,000 fields in area, increasing the number of available farms in range fivefold. Similiar benefits apply to ranges a player feels he can safely make capture attempts.
Another common use for Tournament Squares are to ensure that large armies require less feeding time. Often, players have armies which eat hundreds of thousands of wheat per hour. The less time that army is eating (as opposed to reinforcing a village with a large wheat supply), the easier for the controlling player. It follows that for players wishing to reach an important target first - such as attack a World Wonder, capture Building Plans or attack an Artifact village - the Tournament Square often makes an important difference.
An uncommon situation where a Tournament Square is useful is when troops from several villages need to land at the same time. It is often difficult to get all the timings correct, so a Tournament Square may provide a player with a second chance. For example, he may attack an Artifact village with his main army, but send his hero from a 2nd village where he wants to keep the artifact. If his hero accidentally lands a second too soon, he has to cancel the attack. If he then adds a level to his Tournament Square, assuming the target village is more than 30 fields away, he has another window of opportunity to time his attack.
In a similiar vein, the Tournament Square can be used to help hide a player's travel time. Often it is possible for a player to determine what troops someone is attacking him with by calculating the distance between the players and inferring the troop's travel speed. A Tournament Square can help confuse the process for long range attacks, forcing the defending player to guess at what troops are attacking.
