Gauls
From Travian
Gauls are the most peaceful of all three tribes in Travian. Their troops are excellent for players with a defensive style of play, and the Gallic cavalry (including merchants) are the fastest units in the game.
Gauls are excellent at defending, but an aggressive tactic is possible, too. It gives you the opportunity to develop into any possible strategic direction (defensive or aggressive, lone wolf or reliable helper, merchant or plunderer, infantry or cavalry, settler or conqueror).

[edit] Advantages
- Fastest cavalry troops available for use
- Best and most efficient defensive troops
- Merchants can carry 750 resources at 24 fields per hour, faster than any others
- Crannies can hide double the amount of resources that an ordinary one could hide
- The only tribe that can build Trappers. (3.5 only) The usefulness of the Trapper has been increased by the recent 3.5 upgrade, which allows more than one Trapper to be built.
- Cheap Settlers - 5500 / 7000 / 5300 / 4900 to build.
- Palisade's protection is average compared to City Wall and Earth Wall.
- Gallic beginning unit is phalanx, an excellent and well-balanced defensive unit. Hence, all Gaul's villages can build defensive force without any additional cost on research.
[edit] Disadvantages
- Offense not as good as others, but still good.
- Gallic hammer is not as good as Roman and Teuton.
- Gallic troops carrying capacity is slightly lower than the other tribes
- (3.5 only) Each tribe has their own special building. Many people think that the gauls' trapper is the least beneficial of these special buildings.
- Expensive siege weapons.
- Gallic beginning unit is a defensive unit and is the worst infantry raider of three tribes. Hence, it's difficult for Gaul player to raid and grow quickly in the beginning.

For additional details, see troops.
As an additional note, troops in the barracks and stable train 20% faster.
[edit] Phalanx
The Phalanx is the basic infantry of the Gauls and is cheap and fast to produce. Although crop-wise speaking, phalanx's total defence (90/crop) is lower than praetorian and spearman, phalanx is cheaper, faster to build and more balanced. Phalanx is usually considered the best defensive unit in overall.
Requirements
- Barracks level 1 (requiring Rally Point level 1 , Main Building level 3)
[edit] Swordsman
Swordsmen are more expensive than the Phalanx, but they are an attacking unit.
Defensively they are quite weak, especially against cavalry. However, as the only attacking infantry unit, this is the Gaul's weapon of choice for destroying large numbers of enemy forces.
Since swordsman is the only Gaul's infantry attacker, swordsman is the main force of any Gallic hammer.
Requirements
- Academy Level 3
- Blacksmith Level 1
Cumulative requirements, however, include:
- Barracks level 3 (for Academy), Main Building level 3 (for Academy), Academy level 3 (for Blacksmith).
The stated requirements for troops are often deceptively stated in this way.
[edit] Pathfinder
Pathfinders are the Gaul's spies. They can be sent to scout other villages.
Requirements
Cumulative requirements, however, include:
- Barracks level 3 (for Academy), Main Building level 3 (for Academy), Academy level 3 (for Blacksmith), Academy level 5 (for Stable).
[edit] Theutates Thunder
The Theutates Thunder (shortened to TT) is the Gallic light cavalry and raiding force. They are the fastest troops in the game (40% faster than the second fastest attacking cavalry Equites Imperatoris!!), capable of striking swiftly and effectively at far-flung targets. They are not good defenders, though, so they should not be kept home when enemies are knocking on the gates.
Requirements
Cumulative requirements, however, include:
- Barracks level 3 (for Academy), Main Building level 3 (for Academy), Academy level 5 (for Stable), Blacksmith level 3 (for Stable).
[edit] Druidrider
The Druidrider is a Gaul's mobile infantry defender. The Druidrider is the fastest defensive unit in the game, and is therefore indispensible in protecting an extensive region, especially against slow-moving infantry attacks.
Requirements
Cumulative requirements are the same as a Theutates Thunder.
[edit] Haeduan
The Haeduan is the Gallic heavy cavalry unit, a powerful attacker and also a top-tier anti-cavalry defender, making it a strong counterpart to the Druidrider in providing mobile defense.
Requirements
Cumulative requirements are the same as a Theutates Thunder.
