Maceman, known as the Clubswinger on Travian 4, is the cheapest unit in Travian and is the most basic unit in the Teutonic infantry. They have poor defence, especially against cavalry. Their main value is in their raiding ability, carrying up to 60 resources. As they only cost 250 resources in total, 5 full raids would be more than enough to cover their costs; their attack power equals the infantry defence of the basic Gauls unit, Phalanx, which costs 315 resources, and is slightly higher than that of the basic Roman unit, Legionnaire, which costs 400 resources. This is the greatest factor of Teutons' domination in early game.
In mid game, players often move on to Axeman for their 50% higher attack power for the same upkeep, although maceman is still sometimes used for harassment or taking out lower value targets due to their extremely cheap cost that is about half of that of Axeman.
